Cut hand injuries
In 2011 there have been 2 serious cut related injuries to drivers whilst securing steel.
23 September 2011 at Tata Steel Packaging Duffel
A driver was securing his load which consisted of scrap coils. The driver was wearing gloves but the load had very sharp edges. The steel cut through the gloves resulting in a severe cut to the left hand.
12 December 2011 at Tata Steel Tubes Zwijndrecht
A driver was assisting a colleague driver with sheeting his load which consists of >14metres tubes. The driver caught his hand on a blister on one of the tubes. His hand was severely cut the driver had to be taken to hospital for further treatment. He received 10 stitches. He was fortunate that the cut was 2mm from the tendon. The driver had to rest for 2 weeks.

Please make sure:
• Please make all drivers aware of the risks associated with coming into contact with steel
• Drivers should be advised at all times to avoid direct contact with the steel product
• Drivers must cover there arms and legs when securing steel product
• Cut resistant gloves are recommended for drivers at risk of coming into contact with unpackaged steel.
