Broken wrist due to fall

What happened?

On August 17th at 2040hrs at TataSteel Shotton, the IP (the Driver) was attempting to close the roof of his trailer with his roof pole. It was halfway closed when roof jammed. Shunter pushed on the side of the trailer, roof released, driver stepped back sharply, tripping over one of the load restraint straps on his last coil.

The IP suffered a broken wrist and is now off work for potentially up to 16 weeks.

The investigation is currently underway, however facts so far:

• The roof was stiff to close

• Lack of knowledge of when to defect the trailer rather than persevere with closing the roof

This incident highlights 2 main themes:

• Regular maintenance of trailer sliding roofs

• Robust defect reporting procedures

Essential Requirements:

- Never use excessive force

- Sliding roofs must be regularly inspected and maintained

- Always use a Roof Pole to operate Sliding roofs

- Defects in Sliding roof mechanism must be reported

- Trailers must be Fit For Purpose before use!

- Defective trailers WILL be turned away
