Load Shift Due to Heavy Braking - Wire Rod in Coil

What happened:

On 17th April 2013 a driver with a full load traveling to Barcelona, was forced to brake heavily to avoid a collision on the M1 southbound. The coils moved forward partially through the trailer headboard severing the air and electrical cables rendering trailer and truck immovable. Driver informed his company who informed P&O, coils were recovered and reloaded to another trailer and returned to the customer for inspection.

Damaged Truck 1 and 2

Findings:

Load shifted due to a combination of insufficient tension in the webbing straps during securing and the heavy braking.

Recommendations:

  • All straps must be checked for sufficient tension before leaving loading points by Load Checkers/ Safety Inspectors.
  • Loads to be photographed before departure to confirm load security and cargo condition.
  • Where transhipment is needed then advice Must be sought prior to steel handling and applying Load Restraint.
