Driver Injury - Fall whilst closing a sliding roof results in a broken ankle
What Happened:
At approximately 1200hrs a sub-contractor driver was attempting to close his trailer roof from floor level on an exterior loading bay apron. Whilst undertaking this activity his hand slipped from the pole causing him to twist and fall to the ground which resulted in a fractured left ankle.
Findings:
- The IP had hooked his pole onto the wire release cord which is the INCORRECT method.
- Floor surface is concrete and in good condition
- Full PPE was worn, anti slip boots and roof pole in good condition
- IP had driven the trailer outside onto the apron outside the loading bay
Recommendations:
- Only pull on the proper tabs to open a sliding roof. NEVER PULL ROOF CLOSED USING THE RELEASE CORD!!
- Trailer had ropes and straps attached to the relaese cord and roof struts. Although not the cause of the incident, any ropes or straps connected to the roof or release cord MUST BE REMOVED immediately.
