Driver Behaviour……

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Focus

Drivers arriving without the correct PPE remains one of our biggest frustrations!!

To understand why drivers decide not to arrive with PPE or not to wear it, I want to know if we all know WHY we are asking drivers to wear PPE?

GlovesOveralls

This months focus – Arms, Legs and Hands covered

When securing steel, Drivers can encounter sharp edges and easily cut themselves. Keeping arms, legs and hands covered can help to reduce the risk of cuts and scrapes.

With the Summer here, it may be difficult to persuade Drivers to keep covered up during the warm weather and many Drivers probably will not be convinced that this rule is necessary, however, just ask any Driver who has caught his hand on a piece of steel wire - they won’t think twice about covering up!

Driver Pre Arrival Information

FOREWARNED IS FOREARMED!!!

There are two aspects to information required before a Driver arrives at a Tata site: – Drivers and Transport Planners.

The Driver should always check that:-

• Trailer is fit for purpose before they arrive on site.

• Sliding roof is in good working order prior to leaving the previous delivery. It saves time and money. If there is a problem then they can advise their managers instead of driving to somewhere where they won’t be able to load from.

The Transport Planners should always check that the Driver has everything they need before they arrive at a Tata site. The Planner should check the Driver has:

• All correct Personal Protection Equipment

• The correct Equipment (right trailer type, roof pole, timbers, edge protection, correct quantity and standard of straps)

• The right knowledge! It may have been a while since that Driver has been to the site – are they familiar with the site rules, securing method, and where to report to.

In the coming weeks, we will be rolling out our Pre Arrival collection plans which will aid the Driver and the Planner to know in advance what to expect.

P&O Training programme

During April, May and June we have been rolling out our new Driver Training Package to hauliers and traction providers.

We have received over 400 records of new Drivers trained in the new package already from our European hauliers.

We have trained around 60 of our UK Traction providers who pull P&O trailers and they are currently in the process of rolling out the training to their Drivers.

Many thanks to all involved in training Drivers and keep up the good work!!

New Tata Load Restraint Guidelines

The Tata Load Restraint Engineers have been working on the following new guidelines:

• Bright Bar in bundles

• Plate

• Billets & Blooms

These to be added to the Coil in the Well and Sections LRG’s released earlier this year.

These will be communicated to all relevant Hauliers in due course.
