Happy New Year!!

Welcome to the first P&O Safety Newsletter of 2012. We wish everyone a Safe and Injury/Incident free Year!

Summary of 2011

2011 ended with a total of 22 injury accidents. 6 Lost Time Accidents and 16 minor injuries. 59% of injury accidents were attributable to the activity of “trailer preparation / close up”. 41% of injury accidents resulted from “falls”, with “slips and trips” and “handling” accounting for 18% each. 23% of injury accidents were caused to the foot/ankle area.

In 2011 we had 4 load losses, 19 load shifts and 16 police (German, Swiss, UK) stops/checks.

2012 Objectives

As the graph for 2011 shows, the majority of injury accidents were attributable to the activity of ‘trailer preparation/close up’. This demonstrates that we still have a problem with some Drivers who do not know how to operate their equipment and are getting hurt in the process.

The continuing focus for P&O throughout 2012 will be education and training for Drivers to reduce instances of bad behaviour and accidents.

Trailer Park Brakes

The issue of trailer park brakes not being applied, should continue to remain high on all of our agendas. Please take the time to remind drivers of the importance of applying the trailer park brake when uncoupling a trailer.

2nd Tier Sub Contracting

Also worth reminding people about is the issue of 2nd Tier Sub Contraction. This is strictly forbidden. The below chart demonstrates the tiers allowed for work with P&O Ferrymasters.

Uncoupling Incidents.

The Autumn of 2011 saw a number of incidents where trailers were not correctly coupled, and resultantly were “dropped” when the driver pulled away. Our coupling/uncoupling procedure is appended to this bulletin, please rebrief drivers on the key points.

Proactives

A few good examples of Proactive behaviour were brought to our attention which are worth sharing with the wider Haulier community:

• One haulier has purchased 400 chin straps and issued to all their drivers.

• One haulier has purchased 50 full sets of Personal Protection Equipment and placed in their traction units so all Drivers have access to it.

• One Traction Provider is sending out a weekly text to all his drivers reminding them to apply trailer park brakes.

If anyone has any further examples of Proactive behaviour they would like to share with us then please email us at tatasafety@pofm.com
