Handbrake Alarms

The issue of tractor unit handbrakes not being applied should continue to remain high on all of our agendas. Please use the link below to see details of two HSE notices of the recent prosecutions regarding two companies who failed to implement procedures, which resulted in the death of a driver.

Stay In Control

Drivers must check, check and check again – visually and physically that they have applied their handbrake before turning off ignition and removing keys before exiting the cab.

Equipment Maintenance & Defect Reporting

Defect Reporting

Regular maintenance of equipment is essential and the focus must be on frequent maintenance and lubrication of sliding roofs.

Preventative planned maintenance schedules are vital to ensure equipment is in good, safe working order.   Ask drivers to check their roof operates smoothly before leaving a delivery site.   If a driver encounters a problem with any aspect of his trailer then they must report the fault as soon as possible.

Please ensure adequate defect reporting systems are in place and adhered to.

Hands

Zero Harm Campaign - Hand Protection

This is a very relevant topic as we don’t think of our hands as tools but we use them everyday and we see this type of incident occurring frequently, more than 90% of the incidents 'caught in/between an object' results in a hand or finger injury.

A copy of the campaign accompanies this newsletter.

Give way to rail

Road Rail Crossing Alert Bulletin

There have been two serious near misses at rail crossings on Tata sites in recent weeks.

First incident at Skinningrove where a driver has cut a corner thus impeding his vision of the lights and has gone through on Red.

Second incident is detailed in the accompanying Red Stripe.

REMEMBER RAIL TRAFFIC ALWAYS HAS PRIORITY OVER ROAD, ALWAYS STOP AT RAIL CROSSINGS. DO NOT TAKE SHORT CUTS. ENSURE YOU CAN ALWAYS SEE THE LIGHTS.
